It was important to the Whale Rescue Crew that the logo design had a uniquely New Zealand flavour, while portraying the determination and focus of its mission. The boldness of the red text signifies the urgency and gravity of the situation, while black represents professionalism. The whale tail is framed as the fundamental element and the koru (spiral) represents the cultural connection between Māori and marine mammals and the significant role that Iwi play at stranding events, along with integrating the koru’s specific representation of renewal and the beginning of life.
